Thank you to the Board of Management, Parent’s Council, staff and parents for organising such a wonderful day on Friday to mark my retirement from teaching. This is a very special community and I will always treasure the many memories I have of my 17 years working with you and your children. Friday was an incredibly special day and despite all indications to the contrary there are not enough words to describe the feelings I experienced during my ‘surprise concert’ or at the magnificent party in the school last night. I am so grateful and offer a simple thank you.

Outdoor Classroom
This beautiful area or outdoor classroom has just been added to the school to mark the retirement of the principal Ms O Connor. Beautifully designed by Joe Kilbride and created by Debcon Construction with the assistance of many able bodied volunteers it will provide the teachers and learners with an observation post for science foraging, a place to listen to stories – imagine listening to the tale of Farmer Duck as you hear tractors and horses go by – or it has also been suggested that it might be very useful for team talks. A plaque will soon be added with a quote from the 1999 Science Curriculum – Science is a human endeavour fueled by creativity and imagination….. – well children, let your imaginations run free.
As you can see it already serves as a meeting place during breaks.
On a personal note may I say a sincere thank you to The Board of Management and Parent’s Council for turning this idea into a reality. They do so much to ensure that the children attending this school are given every opportunity and as principal and on behalf of the staff I wish to express our gratitude for their willingness to constantly imagine an even better learning environment for their children.
Hurling Success
We just had to post some official shots of the A and B Hurling teams before we reach the end of this fantastic year for hurling in our school. When Miss O Sullivan, yes a Cork woman, first suggested that she would like to work on developing hurling skills with the children we were delighted. We were even more delighted when members of the local club St. Joseph’s decided that they would like to work with her to develop the game in this area. Miss O Sullivan had to leave us at the end of the year but members of the club decided to continue her good work and were supported by the Laois County Board. Then Mr Fitzgerald joined the staff and training took off in earnest as he organised lunch time leagues. Pupils and past pupils experienced success at club level and at school level very quickly joined the ranks contending for silverware at Cumann na mBunscol finals. Many times we tried but always just missed out at that final moment.
This year we made our break through and the A team won their division and secured our first ever hurling trophy. Congratulations to them on such a fine achievement. We are so proud of your achievement and also the achievement of seeing both teams contest their division finals in both hurling and football this year. Well done to the ladies who also contested their football final in October. Some achievement – 5 leagues and 5 finals.
Well done to the organising committee of Cumann na mBunscol who organised a B league in both hurling and football so that pupils were provided with an opportunity to actively participate rather then just stand on the sideline.
Thank you to Ms. Walsh, Ms. Rowan, Mr. Mullooly and Mr. Fitzgerald, our visiting coaches Sean, John and Ciarán (as well as all those who give of their time to train these children at club level). We should also mention our handball contestants and hopefully this group will expand now that we have been gifted with a beautiful handball wall thanks to our local club.
However this year’s glory belongs to the A team and their trainer and we salute them on their fine achievement. We are very proud of you.

Coming next week
Remember that we are closed on Tuesday. Next week we hope to have a video of Gearóid’s winning speech in O’Moore Park following their victory in the Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Final along with some action shots taken during both matches.
Green Schools Awards Ceremony
We have just received some photos from the Green Schools Awards Ceremony. Members of the Green Schools Committee have worked tirelessly to guide us towards our 4th Green Flag and we look forward to celebrating this event with a flag raising ceremony this month. You will find all the details on this blog.
