Debate

Congratulations to the 5th class team who represented the school so superbly this morning. They were not successful on this occasion but they presented their arguments with conviction and clarity and we have no doubt that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. They were very well supported by all their researchers and are looking forward to many more challenges throughout the year. A sincere thank you to Mrs. Murray and Ms. Holden for all the work that they have put into developing this strand of the curriculum. The skills they are developing will go a long way towards ensuring that these pupils are articulate and reasoned citizens. We wish our visitors all the best in the competition.

We were particularly proud of the manner in which the whole class represented their school and their families when looking after the visiting team. A major thank you to all those who provided such beautiful goodies. Our visitors were truly impressed.

Call for photographs

Your children are asking for your help with their homework. We are all putting together a heritage calendar for the coming year and would be grateful for your assistance in taking shots for inclusion on the published calendar and on the school blog.

Please check your child’s bag for details of their curriculum area. This project will run throughout the year but we are looking for photographs this week so that we can organise the published version.

You can help

Each class will celebrate a particular part of our local heritage in our next calendar. We will ask each child to take a photograph related to their particular part of the project and would be grateful if parents could assist their children with this assignment. These photos should be sent to the school by email or on a memory stick (which will be returned on the day). We are aiming to have all photos with our creative artist, Kathleen Crosby, by the second week in October so that she has time to make a collage incorporating the class photo taken today.

Each class will work on a project around their particular area of interest and one project will go live on the blog each month next year featuring all the photos submitted for inclusion.

We have 8 classes so will have 4 extra pages to fill. Why don’t you as parents submit aspects of our local heritage for inclusion? Pictures from the ploughing, the steam rally, community events, community clean up, sport, musical events etc.

The children will be involved in the following

Junior Infants: Oral Heritage – pictures of adults who tell them stories

Senior Infants: Visual Heritage – the view from my garden/house

First Class: The old churchyard

Second/Third Class: Our school

Third/Fourth Class: Ballyadams Parish Church

Fifth Class: Local place names

Sixth Class: Ballyadams Castle

How about suggestions for a great day out in the locality or county? I think it would be ok if you crossed any of the surrounding borders. You may also have access to an important piece of heritage in the locality so please fell free to contact us with any ideas you may have. If you would like to share some local folklore we would be delighted. If you are interested in local history or the local environment please join in.

Looking forward to a fruitful community project. We live in a beautiful county so lets tell the world about it.

Keep checking in for updates.
