Call for photographs

Your children are asking for your help with their homework. We are all putting together a heritage calendar for the coming year and would be grateful for your assistance in taking shots for inclusion on the published calendar and on the school blog.

Please check your child’s bag for details of their curriculum area. This project will run throughout the year but we are looking for photographs this week so that we can organise the published version.

Further details under ‘You can help’ in September 2013

Call for assistance

Members of the Parent’s Council Committee would be delighted to hear from any parent who might like to assist with the Annual School Walk on Friday Oct 25th. Please contact a member of the committee if you can help.

If you do not have a contact number, leave your name with a member of staff and we will put you in contact with the committee.

Thank you

Triple P Parenting

You will find an invitation to a free seminar for the parents of Junior Infants, Senior Infants and 1st Class in your child’s school bag. This talk will take place on Wednesday, Oct 16th at 7.30pm, will last for 1 hour and following the presentation tea will be served during which the facilitator will be happy to address any individual concerns that you might have.

These talks are provided by Longford/Westmeath Parenting Partnership and have been offered to schools in Laois. We look forward to a large attendance.

You can help

Each class will celebrate a particular part of our local heritage in our next calendar. We will ask each child to take a photograph related to their particular part of the project and would be grateful if parents could assist their children with this assignment. These photos should be sent to the school by email or on a memory stick (which will be returned on the day). We are aiming to have all photos with our creative artist, Kathleen Crosby, by the second week in October so that she has time to make a collage incorporating the class photo taken today.

Each class will work on a project around their particular area of interest and one project will go live on the blog each month next year featuring all the photos submitted for inclusion.

We have 8 classes so will have 4 extra pages to fill. Why don’t you as parents submit aspects of our local heritage for inclusion? Pictures from the ploughing, the steam rally, community events, community clean up, sport, musical events etc.

The children will be involved in the following

Junior Infants: Oral Heritage – pictures of adults who tell them stories

Senior Infants: Visual Heritage – the view from my garden/house

First Class: The old churchyard

Second/Third Class: Our school

Third/Fourth Class: Ballyadams Parish Church

Fifth Class: Local place names

Sixth Class: Ballyadams Castle

How about suggestions for a great day out in the locality or county? I think it would be ok if you crossed any of the surrounding borders. You may also have access to an important piece of heritage in the locality so please fell free to contact us with any ideas you may have. If you would like to share some local folklore we would be delighted. If you are interested in local history or the local environment please join in.

Looking forward to a fruitful community project. We live in a beautiful county so lets tell the world about it.

Keep checking in for updates.
